Reflections on a week of writing every day

👋

It's been a week since I started this little challenge of writing and publishing every day. So are my thoughts.

Getting started was tough. But things started to flow once I got going though. I wrote my first article in 10 minutes and as soon as I was done I was flooded by ideas of other things I could write about. I felt I actually had a lot to say.

That feeling has been consistent every day. As soon as I get into the flow of writing after 5 or 10 minutes, ideas start flowing in.

But once I stop, those ideas start to disappear again. So I now write them down.

Writing in the morning was easier. There were a couple of days where I wrote quite late in the day, and those were more challenging - the longer I leave it, the more time I've had to second-guess myself and poke holes in topic ideas.

My goal is to publish before 12:00 going forward.

This also frees my mind for the rest of the day, as I don't have this hanging over me.

Having a plan helps a lot. The easiest days where the days where I had decided what to write about the day before. That gave me time to structure my ideas ahead of time. When I got to writing it just flowed straight out of me.

The hardest days were when I didn't really know what to write about - so I had to organise my thoughts on the fly.

It got easier. As days go by, it's getting easier and easier to write, and more importantly, to publish. This was my main goal and I'm excited to see how this continues to progress!

It's starting to take more time. The first couple of days were lightning-fast. It took me 10 or 20 minutes to write a post. Now, they are taking a big longer. I'm editing more, spending more time picking words, moving sentences around, and so on.

This isn't necessarily bad. I believe that my best writing requires editing. But I don't want to edit too much and cut out my style and personality. I'm trying to find a balance here.

I don't think I can keep this up forever. I'm enjoying this experiment and I want to continue writing, but doing it daily is a lot. I didn't expect to keep it up forever, it was a temporary challenge to get me going.

I'm committing to continue daily until August 31st, and then I'll decide on what to do after that. Maybe a weekly post? Maybe daily but have a max word-count? I'm not sure 🤔

(you can find all the stuff I'm writing for this challenge here)

See you tomorrow 👋
